Costa Rica offers a path to residency to rentiers and pensioners. In both cases, the applicant will need to show a stable and continuous income to finance living in Costa Rica. After three years of residency in Cost Rica, the applicant will be eligible for permanent residency. Citizenship is possible after seven years of residency in Costa Rica. The country does not levy any tax on foreign income. You are not allowed to take any employment in Costa Rica under this visa.

Application Process
The Costa Rica rentier and pensioner visa provides a
three-year resident permit to approved applicants. There is a
minimum presence requirement of four months of the year to
maintain your status and qualify for permanent residency.
Both paths are slightly different in what is considered an
eligible source of income.
In both cases, the spouse and dependents 25 years old and
under will qualify as dependents. Older children with a
disability also qualify, regardless of age. You will also need to
present a police clearance certificate from the place where
you have resided in the last three years.
Rentier
- To qualify for the Costa Rica rentier visa, you will need to prove a monthly income of at least $2,500 that secure for at least the next two years. The source needs to be from passive income, such as mutual funds, stocks, a 401k, equities, bonds, rental income or a savings account. It can also be from a bank deposit covering the minimum expense for the two first years. That amount will need to be of at least $60,000.
Other requirements:
- To qualify for the Costa Rica pensioner visa, you will need to show a minimum monthly income of $1,000. The source needs to be from a government or private company pension covering you for your lifetime.
